Welcome to Earith
The sign of the village of Earith, Huntingdonshire
Herhythe, Herhethe (12th century); Herethe, Erehethe,
Erhuth (14th century); Earette, Earythe (16th century), Earith
(modern).
Earith, the eastern most parish of the District of
Huntingdonshire, stands by the River Great Ouse at the southern end
of the 30 straight miles of the Old and New Bedford Rivers, the
latter better known as the Hundred Foot Drain. Eastwards flows the
Ouse, or Old West River, towards the North Sea at Kings Lynn and
along it comes holiday makers in boats from Cambridge and Ely to
cruise the old and new waterways. The angling, too, is good. A
modern sluice bridge regulates the waters in the Hundred Foot.
Between the two embanked waterways are the earthworks
called the Bulwarks, a scheduled ancient monument. Although a bronze
Roman figure of Jupiter, now in the British Museum, pottery and
other Roman remains have been found in Earith the Bulwarks are not
Roman but a 17th century Civil War fortification. They cover over
4.5 acres, with a bastioned quadrangle and outworks.
Earith is one of the parishes of the District of
Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is
Huntingdon, the other principle towns being
St Ives
home of the Chapel on the Bridge,
St Neots
the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of
Godmanchester and
Ramsey
site of the former Abbey. Earith's nearest neighbours are
Bluntisham,
Colne and
Somersham.
